A funny and sweet video. The creator of the AMV said they really enjoyed creating this, and it shows in the quality of the video. The way the scenes all add up to a finale, shows it was well planned, and every great anything, started with a great written plan. Enjoy.
Anime: Lovely Complex, be sure to check out the manga too!
Song: Barber of Seville - Overture, composed by Rossini, and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Best of You
In this AMV the creator mixed scenes of the band playing from the real music video into the video with compositing. On Linux it is really easy to do this same effect with a high level of control, only down fall is you got to be able to visualize what you want, it's a good idea to think about this and try to draw it out or write it out on paper.
So here it is an a nutshell, we open a blank image in Inkscape and use black and white, then open that in say, OpenShot and select which color to make transparent. It is as easy as that, and with the help of key frames that image can be animated across the screen, like a moving window to the background layer of video.

A song called Phuck Uew
A hilarious video from a female editor, the song is from a female singer as well, the song is catchy and good. She uses various anime, to many to list but for the original and a list of the anime used go to AnimeMusicVideos.org. All of the scenes are pretty much someone getting a beat down or being a klutz.

OpenShot Basics
The developer of OpenShot has made a commitment to stick with three basic criteria for his application they are: easy to use, stable, powerful. Well Jonathon has done just that, I would recommend this program to an average pc user, it has been stable since before 1.0, and with the compositing feature and high definition capability it is just as powerful as any proprietary video editor. In fact I'd argue that it gets more power from the hardware seeing as it as a native Linux application.
Fun fact; if you go to Pixar's website to purchase software for digital animation you can choose between Linux, Mac-OSX and Windows, and chances are the server farms are all running Linux. Although the real cool thing is that one of the artists (Windows clients) can connect to the server (Linux), and have it take care of its' processing needs.
Here is a quick demonstration of using OpenShot. In the video you will see adding files to the time-line, zooming in and out in the time-line, using layers, adding transitions creating a title and credits, and exporting. This was made with version 0.8.2, the current release is 1.2 and has made exporting simpler, and added an easy way to add 3d text.
Screencast of OpenShot 0.8.2 from Jonathan Thomas on Vimeo.
As seen above this software is really simple, but the use of layers and compositing the potential to create something amazing is there. Look forward to more on OpenShot

Latest from Nostromo
By far Nostromo is one of the best AMV creators ever. He or she, has such an artistic touch, from the coloring to the syncing of a particular visual with sound, oh and don't forget the skills in so many apps. To make an AMV like this a photo manipulation program, audio editor, and a non-linear video editor is required. Any who it is a great video.

To Be More Conscious
To be more conscious is a pretty deep term, encapsulating philosophy and psychology. What are the actual benefits of becoming more conscious? Why would anyone care to do this? And what the heck does it even mean to raise your consciousness anyway?
While raising your consciousness can certainly enhance your spiritual development, this isn’t really a spiritual issue at its core. It’s really about hardcore mental development.
What does it mean to become more conscious? I have found that it is defined as the progressive realization of conscious mastery over your mind. This includes all of the following:
People whose conscious minds remain underdeveloped often suffer from cluttered and unfocused thinking. Needless worries, trivial distractions, inaccurate observations, false beliefs, and negative emotions run rampant through their thoughts, and most of the time they aren’t even aware of it. It’s like being stuck in a mental fog. When you talk to such people, you can sense they aren’t fully there. The lights are on, but no one’s home. Ask them an important question like, “What overall purpose have you chosen for your life?” and you’ll likely get a blank stare in response. Because they don’t really have control of their minds, they live reactively instead of proactively. Such people are virtually powerless. They essentially do what they’re told and try to stay out of trouble, mistakenly assuming this condition is the best they can expect of themselves.
In contrast highly conscious people own their minds. Their thinking is clear and focused, and they select and direct their thoughts deliberately. They retain conscious control over their emotions, and they don’t easily succumb to distractions. When you talk to such people, you can detect depth and clarity. Ask them, “What’s the purpose of your life?” and you’ll likely get an intelligent and thoughtful response. These people live proactively and are emotionally resilient, rising above their circumstances instead of being victimized by them. They possess an inner strength that is undeniable. They exhibit both courage and compassion, and they know that this level of being is how humans were truly meant to live.
The difference between these two groups is that the first group has settled for the default mental operating system installed by their upbringing and social conditioning. Call it Human OS 1.0. They accepted whatever programming they initially received. The second group, however, challenges themselves to continuously improve upon that initial programming, embarking on a lifelong quest to design a more intelligent mental operating system. And they succeed. So while group one is stuck with a shabby and outdated mental OS, group two continues to upgrade its version, enjoying compounding benefits year after year. It doesn’t matter whether they’re currently using Human OS 1.1 or Human OS 7.0 — it’s the process of frequent upgrading that matters most, not the particular version number being used.

What does it mean to become more conscious? I have found that it is defined as the progressive realization of conscious mastery over your mind. This includes all of the following:

- maintaining a positive emotional state regardless of circumstances
- developing empowering beliefs while purging disempowering ones
- understanding your own thought processes, emotions, and behaviors
- staying focused on what’s most important while tuning out distractions
- building an accurate and effective model of reality

BitterSweet Desire
Member of animemusicvideos.org Tsusksin, has created one awesome AMV. The mood of the video was right up my alley, it is good old goth. The song goes amazingly well to the anime. Tsuskin's editing skills and artistic eye really come out in this video. Made in 2007.
A few words from the creator, Tsuskin "Overall I have no clue how much time I spent working on this, because I kept putting it off, and sometimes I'd go a couple months without even touching it, but here it is, lol. I had the idea after listening to the song and I wanted to make a video for it. After looking through my anime collection I thought to myself "hey this would go really well with Petite Cossette", and after giving it some thought and watching it once through I realized just how perfect they were for each other.
This video is about the relationship Eiri and Cossette have. Cossette hates him because his soul belonged to the man that killed her 250 years ago and she believes he is the same man. His was the soul of a talented painter who adored Cossette's beauty, and he believed that she was perfect and loved painting pictures of her. But one day he realizes that she would not remain this way forever and so he kills her. When Eiri finds her soul in a valuable glass, her death is reenacted and he is left with the guilt of killing her. He becomes obsessed with her and she becomes his one true love, to the point where he no longer cares about anything else in his life and would go through any amount of pain to help her. Cossette also loved the man that killed her and takes out her anger towards him on Eiri, because nobody would want to be killed by the one they love. You could say their relationship is rather "bittersweet".
I think this fits well with the lyrics "I didn't want to hurt you but your pretty when you cry". Because as much as he loved her, he knew that her beauty would eventually change as she got older, and so he killed her while she was still beautiful.
And "if you knew how much I loved you, you would run away" goes with how she wants to leave him once she realizes he will live a painful and unhappy life unless he forgets about her"

Bleed the Sky
Artist: Reveille- Bleed The Sky
Anime:
Editor: Tsukin --> AnimeMusicVideos.org
I like this video, and it is a turn in the opposite direction attitude wise. The last AMV posts have been cherry and bright, and this one is dark and violent, but there is a quote that goes as so, " life is like a picture it takes the negative to develop.". Guess that's pretty accurate, although vague.

I Love The World
Life is one hell of an amazing thing, the creators of this AMV would agree with me. This song is awesome, the AMV made me smile, and would like to pass that on.
Life is Beautiful - a great video that does a pretty good job of displaying emotion. The creator of this AMV has recently started a new website. Premonition Studios On it she has allot of AMV and tutorials for proprietary tools such as, adobe after-affects. Unlike this site, where you'll find tutorials for open-source software (free).

Bersek - The Beast Within
My favorite story of all time, which appeared for the 1st time in 1988 as a 45-page prototype. Being a follower of the manga, am currently waiting with much anticipation for chapter 313 to release.
Berserk's setting is inspired by medieval Europe. It centers around the life of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk (鷹の団, Taka no Dan). As he ages, Guts changes from a solitary boy into a man who realizes the value of camaraderie. The story contains elements of both fantasy and horror, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature.
In regards to the AMV, the editing and visuals in this are seriously awesome, but the music and Metalcore influences absolutely kills it. Berserk is a *very* dark series, Metalcore doesn't fit it at all, it works well with Melodic Death Metal or dissonant music, like Nightwish, or other Symphonic bands.

Cinelerra Tutorials Continued
Cinelerra is the most advanced non-linear video editor and compositor for Linux. It is developed by Adam Williams (formerly known as Jack Crossfire). For an introduction and basic tutorials see this previous post AMV RELISH.
Learn about how to install Cinelerra at its' homepage I'd recommend trying out the Elive live-cd, if you are a windows user. All you do is burn the cd and restart your pc into a fully functional production system.
Currently to achieve what Cinelerra does in windows, one would have to purchase more then one application (a video editor & compositor). Then for more advanced effects, a photo manipulation program would be required, which would be another cost. In my honest opinion windows software just can't match the power of open source. One example off the top of my head is the render-farm feature. With Linux it is real easy to have twenty pcs all hooked up to the same network in such a way where they work together. In fact it just might be to easy.
Tutorial Time
Every video needs credits, it just wouldn't be nice to not give credit where credit is due. So let's go over a simple yet extremely powerful method for adding text. Of course with a little playing around you could have the same sliding text like the Star Wars Movie. If you go back to the previous post, there is a tutorial of title. One of the ways to add titles was to put in keyframes and type in between them to make it look like you were typing in the video, really cool.
What makes this method so powerful is that, it's extremely easy to make it look however it was imagined. From creating your custom font just for the video, to having it scrolling over a video, or ever spinning around a center point in 3d, like the rings of Saturn. "If theres a will there a way" I like to say.
Scrolling Text Pt1
Scolling Text Pt2
So, bet you are already working on your text, know I was ready to begin after watching. There will be more tutorials to come, such as picture in picture and motion tracking to start off.

VideoLAN Movie Creator
About VideoLAN
VideoLAN is a project, run by volunteers, backed-up by a non-profit organisation, which produces free and open source software for multimedia, released under the GNU General Public License.Learn more about the VideoLAN project and organisation.
About VLC
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player supporting most audio and video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS, MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac, ...) from files, physical media (DVDs, VCD, Audio-CD), TV capture cards and many network streaming protocols. It can also convert media files, transcode and act as a streaming server over unicast or multicast and IPv4 or IPv6. It doesn't need any external codec, program or codec pack to work.
Overview of the VideoLAN streaming solution
The VideoLAN streaming solution includes two programs:- VLC media player which can be used as a server and as a client to stream and receive network streams. VLC is able to stream all that it can read.
- VLS (VideoLAN Server), which can stream MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 files, DVDs, digital satellite channels, digital terrestial television channels and live videos on the network in unicast or multicast. Most of the VLS functionality can now be found VLC. Usage of VLC instead of VLS is advised.
VideoLan Movie Creator
Now you see why this project is so important. The feature set and stability of VLC rivals anything that could be purchased, and would expect nothing less, from this open source community project.
What is VLMC?
VideoLAN Movie Creator is a non-linear editing software for video creation based on libVLC and running on Windows, Linux, and MacOSX. Currently in alpha stage, but the more people that use the program the quicker the bugs will get squished out.
This is a VLMC demo from December 2009.
It's not released now as it is unstable, and lacks some key features. Play in HD
This is a new VLMC video presentation.
Made during Fosdem 2010.
As you can see, they added a few things, such as audio support (at last...) some improvements in the GUI, and many little (and some bigger) things here and there !
Don't hesitate to visit the official VideoLAN website, along with the developer's blogs !

Tribute to Eden of The East
The song is featured as the opening theme song in the anime series, Higashi no Eden (東のエデン) (Eden o the East), which is animated by Production I.G. This video was animated by Production I.G. which is a change because all the AMVs posted here are created by fans, although it isn't really an AMV either, more like the creators of the anime having fun.

Eden of the East
On November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be known as "Careless Monday," does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later... Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory, is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding in the other. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.
(source I G Production)
Basically the guy lost his memory and all he has is a gun and a cell phone that has a credit limit of 88,390,702 USD. The story unfolds from there.
Higashi no Eden or Eden of the East is an adventurous experiment of an anime with enough charm and suspense that leaves you on your toes, swept up in what is a controlled cat and mouse game set in an alternate modern-day Japan. We know who are the mice, we do not know who is the cat, but they are all part of some cruelly ironic experiment that is looked upon indifferently by the guy in a lab coat.
Given billions of yen at their disposal, a mismatched group of Japanese citizens are chosen to use that money to become a messiah for their country. What they do with the money is up to them, however there are stipulations, and deadly ones. To put it mildly, if you cannot become a saviour of Japan, you do not deserve to be anything else, which includes being alive. All this money and all this power are literally in the hands of these people as they use a mysterious system accessible through their special cell phones and converse with a single, unseen informant known only as Juiz.
Higashi no Eden follows the amnesiac Takizawa Akira who tries to retrace his steps and figure out his identity. Gaining consciousness in Washington, D.C. (butt-naked in the cold and with a cell phone being his only accessory), he catches the sight of Morimi Saki, a Japanese student on a school tour, and from there, the two are pulled into this game back home in Japan. The story is split between Akira and Saki primarily. The scenes involving Akira deal more with the violent and criminal underworld of Japanese society while Saki's scenes focus on the pains of adapting to the normal aspect of society which include getting a job, dealing with your family, friends and even with yourself. When the two aspects of the story merge, it is never contrived, never out of place, and it smoothly and skilfully comes together.
This is not an anime that explains itself for you, and you often have to work with it to understand what is happening. One of the first noticeable aspects of the plotting is Akira taking his new-found amnesia rather lightly. However, Higashi no Eden, as aforementioned, is a clever anime with intelligent characters. Instead of the typical trope in which amnesiacs prove to be incompetent, helpless and lost, Akira is quick on his feet and very smart, and understands that agonising over his situation is wasting time.
Also, some may have a problem with the pacing, given the magnanimity of the situations, the plot does not unfold with a sense of urgency that is usually expected. In fact, some may be inclined to think that the story is meandering around the main issues and events. However, given knowledge that the story is meant to be continued beyond the 11 episode run, working on its own pace is something to be appreciated, not condemned. Since the entire anime covers a very short period of time in the lives of Akira and Saki, it's almost as though we are watching this in real time.
Higashi no Eden is a gorgeous anime. Albeit, the character design is tremendously simple. The style is a very unique and recognisable one, and the characters lack the shiny appeal that other anime characters have though that is not a detrimental aspect of the artwork. It makes them look less generic than other anime characters, as the style used for their design really stands out from others. It utilises both 2D and 3D animation (as well as some excellent papermation/paper animation for the ending sequence), and they work well for it. For example, the famed cell phones use both types of animation for it and it definitely makes them more appealing to the eye. This series has absolutely beautifully rendered settings. The background art is incredible and has an interesting "patchwork" style of colours used on some of the buildings, concrete, furniture, surfaces and roads, making the city never look like a grey mess or the rooms look dull. If anything, it takes a drab setting and makes it beautiful.
The anime also pays tremendous attention to detail, in particular with the lighting and reflective surfaces. There is a particular scene where the characters are simply heading up an escalator, and yet a sign from the other side of the room is seen reflected upon the glossy surface next to them. If any viewer demands more from the artwork, then they are simply being greedy.

Papagayo and Synfig
Designed to help you line up phonemes (mouth shapes) with the actual recorded sound of actors speaking. Papagayo makes it easy to lip sync animated characters by making the process very simple - just type in the words being spoken (or copy/paste them from the animation's script), then drag the words on top of the sound's waveform until they line up with the proper sounds.
After syncing up mouth shapes with actual sounds, Papagayo can then export the result for use with Anime Studio, their 2D animation product. I couldn't find the Linux version though. I am trying Synfig.
Papagayo is free to download and use. Sync 'till your virtual lips are sore! Papagayo is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Download @ Lost Marble
Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based open-source 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources. While there are many other programs currently on the market to aid with the efficient production of 2D animation, there currently is not any other software that can do what this software can.
2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today's digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This laborious task is called "tweening".
Synfig eliminates the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually. This allows you to produce 2D animation with fewer people while producing art of a higher quality. Download @ Tux Family

Good Lip-Syncing
Song: Ted and the Gooch - I Like You. This is a good example of lip-syncing. The creator describes AMV as his stepping stone, in lip-syncing.
"The main purpose of making this amv was to expand my Lip-syncing prowess, and I definitely got the chance to put together a number of complicated shots. The shot on the line ".. to be less of a loser" is the most difficult shot I've ever had to lipsync with 2 layers of moving background, a bar in the foreground, a shadow over her face briefly, and hair swaying over her jawline on either sides of a side-profile shot."

Linux Digital Artisan Tools
Lets take a look at our tools and get familiar with them. When editing I prefer a combination of LiVES, Cinelerra, and customized Gimp script that interfaces it with LiVES, but in favor of the K.I.S.S. method, this site will use KdenLive. It is easy to use and is often compared to Sony Vegas Pro.
All the tools on this site are Linux tools, and any Linux distro, should have KdenLive in its' application repository. In Linux most of the users install all of there software, from one source, that is maintained by the developers of the operating system. They do so using a package manager. It is one of the top priorities to look into when choosing a Linux Distro. The package manager makes or breaks a good Distro. New users are recommended to use Ubuntu.
This quick tutorial will teach you how to put together a video complete with titles, transitions and effects! It's easy to learn the basics of video editing, especially in Linux! It's like Sony Vegas, except it's free and open-source!
This tutorial will teach you how to create a picture in picture transition.
This tutorial will show you how to overlay several images over a video and animate them.
As seen above, video editing is easy, just make a couple videos, do a slide-show, and get to know the layout. Skills in gimp are also a must for adding lot more functionality tool your toolkit as a digital artisan. The star animation in the last video was made with GIMP, and synfig, both of these apps are also available on windows. The animation was basically a slide-show.
Here is a two part introduction to GIMP Basics. Gimp is a photoshop substitute. The tutorial covers the scale, crop, cut with transparency, flip, and rotate commands. It was created by Mike Lively of Northern Kentucky University.
This part covers saving and file size reduction. While the creator of these tutorial recommends, saving as a jpg, gif, or png, when I save an image for editing in a video I save it an the OpenEXR format. OpenEXR is a high dynamic range imaging image file format. TGA File Format, often referred to as TARGA File Format, is a raster graphics file format, and is also ideal for games design.

Shattered Love
Song: Trading Yesterday - Shattered, Anime: Reaching You but the intro where the guy is playing a piano is from D-GrayMan.
A nice romantic themed AMV. Never seen that anime before, but I think the artist does faces really weird, from what was in the AMV.
Nevertheless, the creator, put allot of effort into this AMV and it shows. I particularly am a fan of the way the artist utilized the imaging software and the perspective camera to slide the character across the screen at the right time. The light flash between transitions gives it in even nicer touch.

FooLy CooLy - Coldplay
This is AMV of the week #34 @ www.JustDubs.net. JustDubs has been a great resource for me for years. As the name implies, it only posts english dubbed anime. Recently they have added a section that gives an overview of the series, making it easier to pick up a new anime, and have even started a new website www.justreviews.net, but have yet to explore it.
Regarding the AMV it is based of the anime FLCL. FLCL follows Naota Nandaba, a twelve-year-old boy living in the fictional Japanese suburb of Mabase, and his interactions with Haruko Haruhara.
Naota's life is confined to going to school and living with his father and grandfather. His usually boring life is rudely interrupted by the arrival of Haruko Haruhara, who bursts on the scene by running Naota over with her Vespa scooter, then giving him CPR and hitting him on the head with a blue vintage Rickenbacker 4001 left-handed reverse strung electric bass guitar. Later, Naota is shocked to find Haruko working in his house as a live-in maid
A couple years ago I tried to watch this series, but just didn't like it. Don't know what it was, it just didn't keep my interested, I guess. This AMV is awesome though, the creator did a very good job of capturing and presenting the emotion of the audio. On the other hand I can see that this creator only used basic techniques, and tried lip-syncing, but didn't succeed. Again this is still a great AMV.
Lip-syncing is a very time consuming process. There are two ways that I can think of. The first method is easy and for this method, you need a clip in which NOTHING is moving except the character's mouth. Simply place the clip on the time-line in Lives , and then use the left and right arrow keys to skip through the clip frame by frame. Just move through each frame until you get to one where the character's mouth is completely closed.
Now, select the razor tool, and cut your video clip EXACTLY where the edit line is intersecting it. Now, tap the right arrow key to advance forward one frame, and use the Razor tool again here. You may need to zoom in to be able to do this accurately.
Now click the selection tool, and select the frame that you just cut out. You may want to move it to a different video track so it wont get in your way while you are cutting out more video frames.
The other method for lip-syncing, will be posted shortly with another AMV :) See you then :)

OpenShot 1.1!
OpenShot is an excellent example of free and open source software. It is easy to use, even for people who have never used an NLE (non-linear-video-editor).
In early 2008, Jonathon first installed Ubuntu. He was very impressed, but like many people, realized immediately the lack of a video editor. For weeks he researched, downloaded, configured, compiled, and installed any Linux video editor I could find. It turns out there are many, but none that met his simple criteria.
It doesn't get much easier then OpenShot, not that microsoft movie maker ins't easy, it's just that it only gives has two options, so it doesn't even count. With openshot, adding a slideshow is super easy, but you can spend hours making look the way you want, by adjusting transitions, picture in picture, add text, and more.
Another cool feature is, you can edit a picture that is black and white, and open shot will fade the shape of your pick, in or out.

It seems that open-sourcing his project was a good idea, because the project has been moving ahead of schedule.

Behind every great program, is a great story. Well... I'm not sure if this is a great story or not, but here it is. The author's name is Jonathan Thomas. He is a resident of Arlington, TX, USA. OpenShot Key-Frame Demo!
Getting to understand and use key-frames is very important for getting into more advanced control over your videos. Say I put a thirdy second clip in the timeline. A key-frame can be placed at, the five second mark and another at the end, and then set it to fade, rotate, zoom, and many other thing much more precisely with key-frames.
OpenShot Has Effects!!!
There are plenty of effects to add, and most of them have multiple variable
settings.
